Karate Karaoke Thursday’s – 5 Questions with TJ of Karate Karaoke
5 Questions with TJ Hampton founder of Karate Karaoke Las Vegas.
Q: Can you tell us about the cult like following that surrounds karaoke nights and bars?
A: Every karaoke night has some sort of following or it doesn’t last too long. The reason for cult like followings? Well, sometimes it is the Karaoke host, sometimes it is the bar and sometimes it’s the bartender(s) but the karaoke nights that last for years are the ones that have the most consistency in all three of these areas for the longest amount of time.
Q: Funniest karaoke enthusiast you’ve ever come across?
A: The funniest karaoke enthusiasts I’ve ever seen were a duo. He went by, “Right Doggy,” and she called herself “Pearl Necklace.” They did Celine Dion’s “My heart will go on,” in the most amazing way. She sang the song beautifully while he quoted the movie, made dolphin noises and other sound effects with expert comedic timing. When he shouted, “Iceberg, dead ahead!” I lost it! So funny!
Q: What is the most popular song in your songbook?
A: The most popular song is probably Don’t stop Believin’ by Journey closely followed by Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody.
Q: Are you able to profile your karaoke participants? Can you tell by the song requests if their a rookie, seasoned pro, pro entertainer looking for an ego stroke, you know??
A: Because of the Karate Karaoke belt system I know all of my Purple belts and up very well. You can never judge a book by its cover. I’ve heard easy songs sung horribly and difficult songs sung beautifully by all kinds of different folks. But you can usually tell they’re going to bomb if you can barely read the song slip. If they’re too wasted to write the song down, odds are they’re too wasted to sing it even close to remotely well.
